An endoscope, or colonoscope, is a flexible rubber tube or metal pipe with a light source, lenses and a camera. During the examination, tissue samples may also be taken and polyps removed.<\/p><p><strong>Colonoscopies are among the most frequently performed examinations in gastroenterology and are therefore routine procedures.<\/strong><\/p><p>In addition to colonoscopy, there is also sigmoidoscopy or rectoscopy (examination of the rectum) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.co-ordination.at\/magenspiegelung-wien\/\">gastroscopy <\/a>(examination of the stomach). These diverticula do not initially cause any symptoms and are often discovered by chance.<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<li class=\"elementor-icon-list-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-icon-list-icon\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<i aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"fas fa-caret-right\"><\/i>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-icon-list-text\"><b>Diverticulitis <\/b>is the inflammation of these diverticula. It can occur when stool residue or bacteria accumulate in a diverticulum, leading to infection and inflammation.<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fd0151a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"fd0151a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The main purpose of a colonoscopy is to examine for possible diverticula, polyps or narrowings so that these can be surgically removed if necessary, and also to rule out other diseases (bowel cancer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.co-ordination.at\/en\/crohns-disease-faq\/\">Crohn&#8217;s disease<\/a>, etc.).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9e0197b elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9e0197b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-medium\">Chronic inflammatory bowel disease<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9dcffe3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9dcffe3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Diseases such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.co-ordination.at\/en\/crohns-disease-faq\/\">Crohn&#8217;s disease<\/a> and ulcerative colitis are classified as chronic inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) and affect between 60,000 and 80,000 people in Austria. The symptoms of these two diseases include chronic diarrhoea, abdominal pain, weight loss, fatigue and exhaustion. For differentiation:<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-068db76 elementor-icon-list--layout-traditional elementor-list-item-link-full_width elementor-widget elementor-widget-icon-list\" data-id=\"068db76\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"icon-list.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul class=\"elementor-icon-list-items\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<li class=\"elementor-icon-list-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.co-ordination.at\/en\/crohns-disease-faq\/\">\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-icon-list-icon\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<i aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"fas fa-caret-right\"><\/i>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-icon-list-text\"><b>Crohn's disease<\/b>: inflammation of the entire digestive tract and pain in the upper right abdomen.<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<li class=\"elementor-icon-list-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-icon-list-icon\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<i aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"fas fa-caret-right\"><\/i>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-icon-list-text\"><b>Ulcerative colitis: <\/b>Limited to the large intestine and rectum, with pain in the upper left abdomen<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9a3f7bb elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9a3f7bb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-medium\">Colon cancer prevention<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7aadf67 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7aadf67\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Colorectal cancer screening is recommended for <strong>men aged 45<\/strong> and over and for<strong> women aged 50 <\/strong>and over. If colorectal cancer has already occurred in your family, screening should ideally start earlier.<\/p><p>According to statistics, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in men and even the second most common cancer in women in Austria. Every year, approximately 2,500 men and 1,900 women in Austria are confronted with the diagnosis of colorectal cancer, and around 3,000 people succumb to it annually. <\/p><p><strong>Preventive colonoscopy<\/strong> offers the opportunity to detect polyps (adenomas) at an early stage, which can subsequently lead to bowel cancer. These are removed immediately during the same examination (polypectomy).<strong> This actively prevents the development of bowel cancer!<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0fb0969 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0fb0969\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Alongside other examinations, colonoscopy is an important procedure for <strong>diagnosing inflammatory bowel disease<\/strong>. In particular, the intestinal mucosa is closely monitored. Performed primarily in cases of blood in the stool and suspected ulcerative colitis.<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<li class=\"elementor-icon-list-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-icon-list-icon\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<i aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"fas fa-caret-right\"><\/i>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-icon-list-text\"><b>Virtual colonoscopy: <\/b>For this procedure, the bowel is inflated with air and imaged using computed tomography (CT).
